Physical State at Room Temperature: White solid, commonly known as magnesia or magnesium oxide.
Relative Molecular Mass: 40.30
CAS Registry Number: 1309-48-4
Density: 3.58 g/cm³ (at 25℃)
Melting Point: 2852℃
Boiling Point: 3600℃
Solubility: Insoluble in water and ethanol, but soluble in acids and ammonium salt solutions.
Characteristics and Application
It reacts with acids to form corresponding magnesium salts and water. For example, it reacts with hydrochloric acid to produce magnesium chloride and water.
It reacts with ammonium salts to release ammonia gas.
It reacts with acidic oxides such as carbon dioxide or sulfur trioxide to form magnesium carbonate or magnesium sulfate, respectively. When exposed to air, it easily absorbs moisture and carbon dioxide, gradually converting into basic magnesium carbonate. Under certain conditions, it combines with water to form magnesium hydroxide, and the pH of its saturated aqueous solution is 10.3.
1. Industrial Field
Serves as a key raw material for refractory materials, used to manufacture refractory bricks, crucibles, and high-temperature furnace linings.
Applied in the production of magnesium salts and magnesium alloys.Functions as a rubber accelerator, acidic wastewater treatment agent, and flue gas desulfurizer.
2. Food Field
Used as a food additive, color stabilizer, and pH regulator.
Acts as a magnesium supplement for the human body.
Employed as a decolorizing agent in sugar refining and an antacid in ice cream powder.
3. Pharmaceutical Field
Medical-grade magnesium oxide can be used as an antacid, adsorbent, desulfurizer, and lead remover.
In medicine, it serves as an antacid and laxative: it inhibits and relieves excessive gastric acid, and is used to treat gastric ulcers and duodenal ulcers.
4. Other Fields
In the processing of high-grade lubricating oils: acts as a detergent, vanadium inhibitor, and desulfurizer.
In silicon steel production: helps form a good insulating layer and magnetic conductive medium on the surface of silicon steel sheets.
In animal feed: used as an additive to supplement magnesium deficiency in animal diets, and also as a rumen buffer (for ruminants such as cattle and sheep).
